Over 4,000 Join Congressman Brad Sherman’s 5th Town Hall of 2023

September 8, 2023

Sherman Oaks, California – Last night, over 4,000 residents joined Congressman Brad Sherman's fifth Telephone Town Hall of 2023 to hear updates and voice their thoughts on the series of critical issues facing our nation.

"As Congress faces a substantial to-do list this fall, like the impasse on federal spending that could result in a government shutdown, it's vital to keep my constituents informed," said Congressman Sherman. "That's why I continue to hold Telephone Town Halls as they allow me to instantly connect with thousands and learn how to effectively champion our community's values and interests in Washington."

Congressman Sherman started the event by illustrating the timeline and hurdles Congress faces to keep the government funded and avert a shutdown, with billions of dollars needed for disaster relief on the line. A senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Sherman provided listeners with updates on efforts to advance the country's international priorities, such as continued assistance to Ukraine or support for the Armenian people affected by a campaign of aggression from Azerbaijan.

Sherman also took time to discuss a series of local priorities, such as connecting the San Fernando Valley with the Westside of Los Angeles through the Sepulveda Pass – an issue Sherman has spent years working on to improve traffic congestion on America's busiest roadway. The Congressman also surveyed how residents felt about hosting the upcoming Olympic Games in 2028 and provided a status on the federal funds he is securing for a vast array of community projects to enhance our environment, local infrastructure, city services and more.

Residents who joined Sherman's Town Hall were eager to ask questions on a range of national and local issues – from how a potential government shutdown would impact their everyday lives, to what was being done to alleviate the ongoing writers/actors strike. Other concerns revolved around the Supreme Court's recent ethics concerns, restoring the right to choose, preparing for wildfires and more. One constituent placed her young daughter on the line who asked the Congressman what can be done to get "green spaces and more shade" at schools. "Well first of all, thank you for raising a daughter who wants to listen to a Telephone Town Hall from a Congressmember and who can articulate a question like that," said Sherman.
