SAG-AFTRA Strike - Sherman Issues Message of Support
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- On July 14, 2023, the American actors' union SAG–AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) went on strike over an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). It has coincided with a Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike as part of broader Hollywood labor disputes.
The strike marks the first time that actors have initiated a labor dispute in the U.S. since the 1980 actors strike and the first time that actors and writers have walked out simultaneously since 1960. Both the 2023 SAG–AFTRA and WGA labor disputes have contributed to the biggest interruption to the American television and film industries since the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
"SAG-AFTRA members deserve protections and economic fairness," said Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) who represents segments of Los Angeles where many people in the entertainment industry work and reside. "I stand in solidarity with sagaftra in their fight for a fair contract."
