Sherman Statement on USAC passing resolution endorsing Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- On February 20th, the Undergraduate Students Association Council to vote on a resolution endorsing the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement against Israel. The 10-3 vote to pass the resolution was conducted by secret ballot amid privacy and security concerns. The resolution follows similar BDS resolutions proposed at other California institutions, with UC Davis' student government and the UCLA Graduate Student Association voting to support BDS resolutions on February 22nd.
Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) issued the following statement in response to the passage of the resolution:
"I'm embarrassed and disappointed that the Graduate and Undergraduate Student Associations at my alma mater UCLA passed resolutions to Boycott, Divest and Sanction Israel.
The BDS movement calls for the destruction of Israel and the boycott of anyone of Israeli nationality – making it inherently discriminatory and antisemitic. I fear these actions have made it even more difficult for Jewish students to have a safe campus environment.
Students who've faced discrimination based on race, color or national origin should report possible violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights.
500,000 people were killed in Tigray in the last three years. These student groups didn't notice and most don't know where Tigray is."
