Congressman Brad Sherman & LACCD Commemorate First Four-Year Degree Offered by Pierce College

Los Angeles, California – Today Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) and the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) commemorated the creation of a comprehensive biotechnology education program at Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) - the first four-year degree of any kind offered by Pierce College and backed by a $2 million Community Project Funding grant secured by Congressman Sherman.
"Biotech is not just a growing industry, but a critical one, as we have seen from the innovations that helped fight against diseases like COVID," said Congressman Sherman. "This program will open doors for students from communities who have far too often been left behind and will give them the tools to pursue a wide range of careers in biotechnology."
"I want to thank Rep. Sherman for his tireless work to secure this essential funding to establish a biotech program at LA Pierce College," said LACCD Chancellor Francisco C. Rodriguez, Ph.D. "This is a great day for the Los Angeles Community College District and an even better one for students passionate about science and technology. Soon, all students will be able to pursue this high growth profession and career and earn a bachelor's degree at a fraction of the cost as compared to 4-year institutions."
The funds secured by Congressman Sherman as part of the Federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 will support the creation of a Baccalaureate Degree Program in Biomanufacturing and certificate programs in the field - the first-ever four-year degree at LAPC. The program will establish partnerships with Biocom California, the Life Science Association of California, and regional employers in the sector to work with stakeholders to formulate a new approach to biotech education that prepares the diverse workforce of the future for success.
"The creation of this biotech program at Los Angeles Pierce College is a significant step for equity in the life sciences," said LACCD Board President David Vela. "It will help students from all backgrounds learn from top professors and gain valuable experience and allow them to do the type of work that can change the world."
