Protecting Social Security and Medicare

Sherman's voting record in Congress has earned 100-percent ratings from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and the Alliance for Retired Americans

Below are some of Sherman's recent efforts in Congress to support Social Security, Medicare and other vital programs that hard-working Americans rely on.

For more than 80 years, the Federal Government has kept the promise to all Americans: if they contribute to Social Security with each and every paycheck, they will be able to retire with dignity and security. That is why Congressman Sherman joined with Rep. John Larson in introducing the “Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust" would extend the solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund for years to come while increasing benefits across the board.

Not only does this plan protect beneficiaries from the rising costs of inflation, it does so without increasing taxes on anyone with an income under $400,000 per year. It would simply require that millionaires and billionaires pay the same Social Security taxes as everyone else.

Fighting for Health Care

Congressman Sherman voted against the Republican cuts to the federal health insurance program in the “One Big Ugly Bill” recently signed by President Trump. The recently passed changes will force an estimated 17 million Americans to lose their health care coverage and targets Medicaid funding by creating a web of new limits on state funding and increasing patients’ out-of-pocket spending.

In March, Sherman joined with Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) to introduce the Medicare Dental, Vision, and Hearing Benefit Act to provide coverage for health care not currently covered under Medicare and provide services like routine dental, eye, hearing exams, and hearing aids.

Sherman also helped pass into law the Inflation Reduction Act, which makes key changes to improve drug costs for those who have Medicare Part D, capping annual out-of-pocket costs.  This legislation limited insulin to a $35 copay maximum and authorized the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to negotiate certain other drugs directly with manufacturers.  This includes medications that treat heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Keeping Social Security's Doors Open

President Trump and Elon Musk have already taken numerous steps to close dozens of Social Security offices around the country. To stop the Trump Administration from shutting down direct access to Social Security, Sherman cosponsored the Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act thatprohibits the closure of Social Security field and hearing offices, placing a moratorium in effect until 2029.

On April 24, Sherman joined local residents gathered outside the Chatsworth Social Security Office to demand that this office, which is quite busy with hundreds of seniors every day, is kept open.

Sherman also took the opportunity to walk inside and thank the hard-working Social Security Administration employees for helping so many of our local residents, even while they’re being vilified by the policies of Musk and Trump.

Protecting Your Private Data from Elon Musk

Within weeks of President Trump taking office, Elon Musk and his DOGE associates attempted to access the personal data of millions of Social Security beneficiaries. The Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration even resigned rather than allow Elon Musk to access the sensitive records held by Social Security, and a federal judge ordered a restraining order stopping Elon Musk and DOGE from accessing your personal data.

To permanently stop Elon Musk and his associates from accessing your private information, Sherman cosponsored The Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act that will firmly place into law the long-standing data privacy protections of the Social Security Administration.

"Since its inception, Social Security has safeguarded the private information of millions of American beneficiaries, and I continue to oppose any effort to compromise the security of the Social Security Administration," said Congressman Sherman upon first introducing the bill.
