CONGRESSMAN SHERMAN REACHING OUT TO  VALLEY STUDENTS

April 7, 2004

Sherman Oaks, CA - Today, Congressman Brad Sherman began touring high schools in the San Fernando Valley to discuss the important issues confronting Congress and their impact on peoples lives.

Congressman Sherman will visit four Valley schools over the next week. He began his sweep with Monroe High School, where he addressed juniors, seniors and student leaders, discussing his job and experiences as a Congressman, as well as what brought him to office. Students then had a chance to raise questions about the issues on their minds.

œWhat we do in Washington often seems out of touch with people here in the Valley. But when we discuss pell grants and college aide, it affects you. When we discuss local grants for homeland security, it affects you, Sherman told the students. œAnd when the federal government runs large deficits, who do you think will have to pay off the debt?

Sherman also discussed opportunities for young people to become involved in government and public service, including internship opportunities in his office. œBy becoming active now, as students, you will be engaged citizens for your entire life. Soon, you will be the ones standing up here telling this to the next generation, Sherman said.

Congressman Sherman is holding a town hall at Reseda High School on Sunday, April 18th, but he acknowledges that teenage students generally prefer other activities on weekends. Sherman going to Valley schools to meet with students in person gives them an opportunity to participate in government.

Between now and April 16th, Congressman Shermans tour of Valley schools will bring him to Canoga Park, Kennedy and Reseda High Schools. A list of dates and times follows:
