Joint Statement by Congressman Sherman and Congresswoman Chu regarding February 6th Judiciary Committee Hearing on CA Wildfires

February 6, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the recent California wildfires affecting the Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and surrounding communities. But, Chairman Jim Jordan and the majority prevented Congressman Sherman (CA-32) and Congresswoman Chu (CA-28) - who represent the areas affected - from providing crucial updates as well as articulate the federal response needed to assist individuals to rebuild their lives. Congressman Sherman represents the Pacific Palisades and Congresswoman Chu represents Altadena and Pasadena. The following are their statements:

“Chairman Jim Jordan is refusing today to allow the testimony of the elected representatives of the districts impacted by the wildfire. This proves that the real goal of the hearing is to denigrate the fire victims and the state in which they reside, for the purpose of shortchanging the fire victims when it comes to federal aid and abandoning them in their time of need,” said the Members. “The victims need help now to recover from the costliest fire in American history, and they do not have time for political games.”

Congressional Republicans must work earnestly with Democrats to support fire victims instead of denigrating them in an effort to abandon them.
