Senators Alex Padilla, Diane Feinstein & Congressman Brad Sherman Salute 2022 National Champion Granada Hills Academic Decathlon Team

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) along with California Senators Alex Padillaand Dianne Feinstein met with the Granada Hills Charter High School Academic Decathlon team on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to congratulate them for capturing the 2022 U.S. Academic Decathlon championship – its record Ninth National Title.

"I am very proud of the hard work and determination demonstrated by the students from Granada Hills Charter High School during this competition," said Congressman Sherman. "These students have proven once again that our San Fernando Valley public schools are representing our community through our commitment to academic excellence. We must continue to support our local public schools and give them the tools and resources to help our young students become future leaders in our community," added Congressman Sherman.

"It was a privilege to meet with students from Granada Hills Charter School," said Senator Padilla. "As their Academic Decathlon team has shown, hard work and dedication pays off. That's why they've earned nine national championships in the last decade. I cannot wait to see what else this dedicated group of young students and future leaders will accomplish."

The Academic Decathlon involves 10 events revolving around a central topic in seven subject areas: science, literature, art, music, social science, economics, and mathematics. Since 2010, the competition has been won by either Granada Hills Charter High School (9 total titles) or El Camino Real High School (8 total titles). Taft High School has also won the competition (3 total titles). Sixteen of the last twenty competitions have been won by Valley schools.

The school's nine-member team includes Zainab Al-Atya, Lily Fairbank-Bermejo, Vivian Le, Anthony Mercado (alternate), Vanessa Miller, Elyssa Nguyen (alternate), Kira Pospeshil, Matthew Salcedo, Colby Sapera, Garrett Scott, and Mason Wong. The team was led by Head Coach, Tyler Lee and Assistant Coach, Amy Contreras.
