Sherman Announces nearly $16 Million in Funding for Community Projects in Bill Signed by President Biden
Sherman Oaks, California – Today, Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) announced that nearly $16 million in federal funds for projects in the San Fernando Valley and parts of the Westside of Los Angeles have been included in legislation signed into law by President Biden today.
"These funds will address vital needs across our community including improvements to our environment, public parks and schools, as well as additional resources to address homelessness, housing availability and services for those in need," said Congressman Sherman.
The community projects approved are:
Hope Center - Hope the Mission
Amount Secured: $850,000
The funding would be used for property acquisition and construction of permanent housing units for people who have experienced homelessness. This is in addition to $4,000,000 secured by Sherman in the prior two years.
Hybrid Food Bank - Labor Community Services of Los Angeles
Amount Secured: $1,616,279
The funding would be used to collect, store, and distribute food to a network of local food pantries. This is in addition to one million dollars secured by Sherman in the prior two years.
West L.A. VA Building 158 - Century Affordable Development, Inc
Amount Secured: $1,500,000
The funding would be used to adaptively rehabilitate an existing office building into permanent supportive housing for homeless veterans.
Alabama Court Housing Improvements - City of Los Angeles
Amount Secured: $500,000
The funding would be used to preserve the housing site for residents who were homeless or who are at risk of experiencing homelessness.
Los Angeles Fire Department Station Renovations
Amount Secured: $3,000,000
The funding would be used to renovate fire stations in the San Fernando Valley and parts of the Westside of Los Angeles. Our firefighters put their lives on the line to protect us, yet many fire stations are over 50 years old and are in need of renovations.
Wildlife Habitat Preservation & Management – Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA)
Amount Secured: $963,000
The funding would be used to buy and preserve forever the beautiful land in the Santa Monica Mountains. Over the years, Sherman has secured nearly $25 million to protect the Santa Monica Mountains.
San Fernando Valley Traffic Safety Improvements – City of Los Angeles
Amount Secured: $1,000,000
The funding would be used to increase pedestrian and traffic safety for San Fernando Valley residents.
Youth Development Facility Improvement Project - Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley
Amount Secured: $850,000
The funding would be used for capital improvements and structural changes to the facilities in order to better accommodate and increase safety for the low-income children and teens who rely on after-school youth development programs. This in addition to $450,000 secured by Sherman last year.
Los Angeles Unified School District Field Improvements
Amount Secured: $850,000
The funding would be used to make needed improvements to school recreational fields, which will directly benefit students and the surrounding community, including low-income and underserved persons.
Sepulveda Basin Hjelte Fields Improvements - City of Los Angeles
Amount Secured: $500,000
The funding would be used to increase recreation opportunities in the Sepulveda Basin through the development of new athletic fields.
California Regenerative Aquaculture Hub - California State University, Northridge
Amount Secured: $963,000
The funding will support CSUN's research in the field of aquaculture.
Track Intrusion System and Positive Train Control Project - Southern California Regional Rail Authority
Amount Secured: $1,000,000
The funding would be used to improve the safety for trains, pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers.
Congressman Sherman worked to secure federal funds for a West San Fernando Valley project that would assist efforts to move utility poles and overhead lines underground in order to reduce the risk of wildfires. "I'm hopeful that next week that Congress will approve the federal funds I worked to secure for the West San Fernando Valley project, but that would be a bill considered next week," said Congressman Sherman.
Other projects totaling $2,000,000 will support our efforts to deal with homelessness, drug addiction and hunger in our communities.
