Sherman Celebrates 3rd Anniversary of the House Passing the Equality Act

February 26, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sunday, February 25th marked three years since the House of Representatives passed theEquality Act to ensure explicit non-discrimination protections for the LGBTQI+ community.

The bill passed with bipartisan support and the co-sponsorship of every Democrat but sat in the Senate without a vote for the duration of the 117th Congress. 2021 marked the second House passage of the bill, following its predecessor in the 116th Congress. The Equality Act was reintroduced in the House in the 118th Congress with every House Democrat as a cosponsor.

"I am proud to have voted for the passage of the Equality Act three years ago, today," said Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32). "This bill strengthens protections for LGBTQI+ people, women, people of color, and religious minorities. As a Member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, I am committed to enshrining this into law."

Throughout the nation, anti-equality legislators continue to barrage the LGBTQI+ community with attacks on their fundamental rights. On the 3rd anniversary of House passage of theEquality Act, we must reaffirm our commitment to ensuring robust nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQI+ people.

The Equality Act sends a clear message that no matter an individual's sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics, everyone deserves a life free from discrimination.
