Sherman Commends L.A. City Council Vote to Adopt IHRA definition of anti-Semitism

November 1, 2022

Los Angeles, CA -- The Los Angeles City Council unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.

"I'm glad to see today the LA City Council voted unanimously to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism," said Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA). "This is the same definition I pushed the U.S. Department of Education to use to enforce Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to protect Jewish students, as well as the one long used by the U.S. State Department."

The resolution, which was introduced by City Councilmember Paul Koretz, noted that "hate crimes reported statewide increased 32 percent from 2020 to 2021 and are at their highest reported level since 2001," according to a report from the California Attorney General.

Sherman concluded: "Thanks to Bob Blumenfield, Paul Koretz, and those who advocated, including the Israeli-American Civic Action Network, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, ADL of Southern California, and Stand With Us."
