Sherman Convenes Briefing on Human Rights in Pakistan

WASHINGTON, DC -- On July 26th, Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32), senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with Dr. Asif Mahmood, noted expert on Pakistan, co-organized a Congressional briefing on Human Rights and Democracy in Pakistan. The discussion focused on four key points: human rights and democracy, free and fair elections, the importance of a free media, and the internal politics of U.S.-Pakistan relations.

"We witnessed a compelling video of a detained journalist's family pleading for his release," said Congressman Sherman after the event. "I reiterate my call for respect for human rights and rule of law in Pakistan."

The event saw a standing-room audience and attendance by U.S. State Department officials, Amnesty International and eight members of Congress: Rep. Adam Schiff (CA-30), Rep. Ted Lieu (CA-36), Rep. Jim Costa (CA-21), Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49), Rep. Kweisi Mfume (MD-7), Rep. Eric Swalwell (CA-14), Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28), and Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46).
