Sherman & House Democrats Introduce the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2023

March 30, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C.Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) joined House Democratic Leadership and legislative leads to formally introduce H.R. 12, the Women's Health Protection Act of 2023 (WHPA).

"Anti-choice forces continue to push for a national abortion ban," said Congressman Sherman. "I won't stay silent while fundamental rights are rolled back...We need the WHPA now."

Following the Supreme Court's decision last summer to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion care is wholly inaccessible in 14 states—with over a fifth of Americans now living in areas without this essential health care. Travel time to abortion clinics has tripled since the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, and women unable to travel or access medication abortion are being forced to carry pregnancies against their will.

WHPA responds to this public health emergency by creating a federal statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care and a corresponding right for their patients to receive that care—free from bans and restrictions that impede access.
