Sherman Marks Nine Years since Historic Aliso Canyon Gas Blowout
Sherman Oaks, California –On October 23, 2024, Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) issued the following statement to mark nine years since the Southern California Gas Company well SS25 exploded at the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility, causing the greatest emission of natural gas and associated toxic compounds in the history of the United States:
"Today marks nine years since the Aliso Canyon gas blowout, the largest natural gas blowout in U.S. history. The fact that we are still learning of all the health and environmental consequences from this terrible and avoidable disaster underscores the need to permanently close the Aliso facility."
Background: Sherman's home was as close as any residence to the Aliso Canyon gas blowout. For nearly four months, the northern Los Angeles community of Porter Ranch suffered from the largest natural gas leak in U.S. history. An estimated 7,000 to more than 8,000 families were displaced from their homes and forced to relocate. Two schools in the area were closed for the duration of the school year, and thousands experienced health symptoms.
