Sherman Statement on Kevin McCarthy's Removal as Speaker of the House

October 3, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC - The Republican-led House voted Tuesday to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA-R.) as Speaker of the House of Representatives - the first such removal in congressional history.

"A solemn moment for our country made possible after the chaos and dysfunction unleashed by House Republicans," said Congressman Brad Sherman (CA-32) shortly after voting in favor of removing McCarthy from the House Speakership. "My vote to remove McCarthy from his role as Speaker was not about any one individual, but towards our duty to govern responsibly on behalf of the American people."

Sherman concluded with an urge towards responsible governance: "I stand united with my House Democratic colleagues in working to find common ground and deliver for the people we are privileged to represent."
