We need to eliminate waste and abuse so our scarce tax dollars can help provide quality education for our children and protect Social Security and Medicare. That's why I helped lead the fight against bailing out Wall Street, and why I am currently helping to lead the effort to get all our money back from Wall Street and prevent future bailouts.
However, my chief priority is to get our economy moving again so there are quality jobs in the San Fernando Valley. Here are some ways I am working to improve the well-being of Valley families:
I am pleased to report a major victory for consumers. Last month, with my strong support, the House passed the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights Act with a strong bipartisan majority.
This legislation will end the unfair and deceptive practices of the credit card industry and protect consumers from the abusive tactics that have driven and continue to drive so many Americans deeper and deeper into debt.

Only part of my job is working on the floor of the House of Representatives, and in the Foreign Affairs, Financial Services, and Judiciary Committees. An equally important part of my job is my work here in the San Fernando Valley, communicating with Valley residents and helping to resolve problems that people are having with federal agencies.

The policies of this Administration – particularly the huge tax cuts for the very wealthy and the $330 million we spend every day in Iraq – have led us to the Bush recession. Our economy needs a jump start. That's why I supported the bipartisan emergency stimulus package which passed Congress in February. It contains two major provisions relevant to Valley families, along with some important small business tax relief:

California leads the nation in adopting progressive environmental policies. As you may know, the state passed regulations to require motor vehicles, manufactured in the 2009 model year and after, to have reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Under this plan, by 2016, greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles would be about 30% below the 2002 vehicle fleet emissions level.

Readers of this publication have a great interest in issues that may affect their business. Having now served for ten years as a Member of the House Committee on Financial Services, I continue to work closely with business leaders from the San Fernando Valley and across the country to enact and improve federal laws and regulations of importance to business.
