Preventing Gun Violence

Congressman Sherman remains committed to fighting the scourge of gun violence that has shattered communities across our country.

Sherman has consistently earned a 100 percent vote rating for his voting record in Congress from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and other groups fighting against gun violence. Sherman has also consistently been awarded an "F" from the NRA for my voting record in Congress.

Below are some of Sherman's recent efforts to combat the gun violence epidemic.

Passing First Major Gun Violence Prevention Law in More Than 25 Years

Following the horrific mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas when a gunman opened fire on Robb Elementary School, killing 19 innocent children and two teachers, Congressman Sherman and his colleagues were determined to deliver real change and came together to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Actinto law – marking the first major gun legislation in nearly three decades.

This historic bill enhances background checks for gun buyers under 21, closed the “boyfriend loophole” to prevent convicted domestic abusers from purchasing firearms for five years, and allocated $15 billion in funding to bolster school security and mental health services.

This bill is a good step to help keep our communities safe, but there’s still plenty of work left to accomplish. Sherman continues to push for solutions overwhelmingly supported by the American people, including background checks, safe storage, and banning high-capacity magazines.

We must enact meaningful gun reform at a national level. That’s why Sherman helped introduce and, last Congress, helped pass through the House measures to strengthen background check laws:

- The Bipartisan Background Checks Act: expands background checks to be required on all firearms sales and closes the gun show loopholes;

- The Enhanced Background Checks Act: extends the time the FBI has to complete the initial background check from three to ten business days.

Sherman helped introduce these common sense, bipartisan bills in this session of Congress and will work to pass them through the Senate and into law.

Weapons of war have absolutely no place in our streets, communities and especially in our schools - a commonsense and life-saving concept.

That’s why in the last session of Congress, Sherman cosponsored and voted to pass through the HouseH.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban which makes it a crime to knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device.

Sherman also helped introduce H.R. 698, the Assault Weapons Ban and is working with colleagues to immediately pass this life-saving measure into law.
